Happy Tortilla Chip Day (told you we’d back).

Hope you enjoyed your margaritas Monday for National Margarita Day. (I know I did!) Today it’s time to celebrate the Margarita’s partner in crime, the tortilla chip.

The tortilla chip was created somewhat accidentally by a Los Angeles tortilla maker looking for something to do with misshapen, rejected tortillas. Despite this humble beginning, the tortilla chip is now a staple of Mexican cuisine in the US.

To carry the Mexican theme a little further, it was on this date in 1821 that Mexico gained its independence from Spain. So who needs Cinco de Mayo – get out there and celebrate Veintidos de Febrero cuarta. Here are a few suggestions.

Rosie’s 29 Second Avenue

We realize recommending Rosie’s again (check the Monday blog) may be double dipping, but hey, if you can’t double dip on tortilla chip day when can you?

If you do go to Rosie’s, may we suggest the Flight of Margaritas to go with your tortilla chips? Get there between 4-7 and enjoy excellent prices on cocktails and delicioso tacos during Hora De Los Amigos.

Dos Caminos

Dos Caminos has been around a long time and they take their guacamole, chips and tequila very seriously. You cannot go wrong with Dos Caminos – unless you try to go there on Cinco de Mayo when it is ridiculously crowded. (Told you you should be celebrating Veintidos de Febrero cuarta.)

Dos Caminos Manhattan Locations:

1567 Broadway

825 Third Avenue at 50th Street

675 Hudson Street at 14th Street

373 Park Avenue South at 27th Street

475 West Broadway at Houston Street

Something a Little Different

If you had your fill of tortilla chips on Monday and are looking for something different to do, why not mark the anniversary of the Supreme Court upholding the right to satirize public figures by visiting Saturday Night Live – The Exhibition (417 5th Avenue). Where better to appreciate the masters of satire and good-natured skewering of public figures. You can see props and memorabilia from SNL and hear inside stories of the legendary show that is now in its fifth decade.

Afterward, if you’ve changed your mind about chips and a Margarita, El Rio Grande (check the Monday blog) is a few blocks east of Saturday Night Live- the Exhibition on Lexington Ave.
